The Best Quick Detach AR-15 Scope Mounts

The Best Quick Detach AR-15 Scope MountsThere are times you want to quickly and easily remove or attach your scope . Perhaps it’s just for storage and you don’t want to be bothered with all the hassle. Maybe there are circumstances where you want to switch out for another accessory. Or maybe you hunt with the same gun day and night. The quickest answer to this problem will be a mount that will provide ease of attachment and reliability without losing your zero. Optics are the most valuable upgrade of any long-barreled firearm, especially traditional bolt-action rifles. In order to attach that excellent piece of glass to your rifle, you have to sift through the myriad scope rings and bases on the market to find an appropriate mount for this scope. Objectively speaking, high-quality optics also need a scope mount of equal quality to go with them. Unfortunately, 90 percent of scope owners do not care which rings or bases they use to mount their optics. That fact has a particular weight when we consider that there are scope mounting systems specialized for hunting, tactical, sport, and recreational shooting. They also run the gamut from very affordable to beautifully machined pieces of mechanical art. This is a question that gets asked a lot. The answer is quite simple; a great quick detach scope mount is often based on a few characteristics and features. Knowing these will allow you to distinguish a great scope mount from one that isn’t the best in reliability and quality. Here are some things to look out for while in search of a quick detach scope mount: Price Yes, it’s not a feature or characteristic of a scope. But in reality, you’ll need to know which scope is affordable for your budget. As always, you need to find something that is the best in quality and performance. Most importantly, it should be something that you can afford. However, don’t sacrifice quality just for the sake of saving yourself a few dollars. AR-15 with UTG Med-pro Compact Riser Mount High-Quality Materials The best quick detach scope mounts are usually the ones made from high-quality materials. For example, steel or aluminum are two of the best materials that most manufacturers go for. Why? Because they want to make the best scope mount when it comes to durability. Not only that, a scope mount’s responsibility is to hold the scope in place as you fire your rifle. Installation And Removal A great quick detach scope not only should live up to its name, but it should also be easy to install to begin with. So, it’s important to find a scope mount that will take just a couple of minutes to install and with as few tools as possible. The good news is that these are much easier to add on and remove than some other scope mounts. Why Have a Quick Detach Mount? There are a lot of different mounting systems, but practically all scope mounts fall into two categories: fixed and quick-detach . Fixed scope mounts provide better durability since they can easily absorb the recoil of the more powerful calibers or the dominant Magnum rounds without issue. As an added bonus, they generally weigh less and do not cost as much as quick-detachable hardware. But there are still times a quick-detachable mount will better suit your needs. Burris 410344 AR-PEPR While a good detachable set will cost more than an equivalent fixed ring, it’s good to remember one thought from a wise man: “Always buy the best equipment you can afford." The best thing about quick detachable or quick release mounts (let’s just go with QD or QR) is that they enable a shooter to mount and dismount optics with no tools. They make mundane tasks like cleaning and maintenance easy too. There are few other reasons for utilizing QDs. First, the user can switch between open sight shooting and scope shooting without having to re-sight in his rifle every time he remounts the scope. Another reason would be to change daily optics for thermals or night vision. Finally you might want to load multiple loads per gun with just a scope swapping. How Does it Work? A detachable mounting system includes scope rings and a base, which are fastened together with throw levers instead of screws or bolts. It will hold zero incredibly well as long as you keep the levers tight. Europeans have long preferred detachable scope mounts featuring extremely tight tolerances. This mount type was particularly prevalent in classic sporting applications on rifles intended for dangerous game. As most of us would agree, it makes a lot of sense to remove the scope and use iron sights for close-in work in a situation like searching for a wounded wild boar through thick brush. There were attempts to overcome those situations with high tunnel-mounts or see-through rings. These have largely fallen out of favor because the higher you mount a riflescope above a barrel axis, the less force is needed to knock the scope out of zero. Another advantage of QD/QR rings is the capability of the shooter to carry another type of optic, such as red dot. Or you might want to have a backup pre-zeroed scope with you in case of damage during an expensive outfitted hunt in the remote wilderness. Besides civilian use, QD scope mounts are most commonly used in tactical systems, as they afford shooters the option of inconspicuously carrying a sniper rifle in hostile territory. You  might hear or read online complaints that QDs will not return to zero after removing and reinstalling your optics. However, a shift in point of impact happens when the shooter has not remounted the scope correctly. It could also be because of using cheaper, low-quality QR rings. QDs and the AR The common use of flat-top AR-15 uppers with different optic types has made quick-detach scope mounts somewhat popular in recent years. All of the described features make an AR-15 ideal platform for detachable mounts. This is especially  true if you’re planning to shoot 5.56 mm, since it has almost non-existent recoil. Also, the best QD scope mounting systems, such as Picatinny or Weaver rails fully complement the AR-15’s design, making your rifle more modular. Unlike traditional bolt-action rifle stocks and receivers that have been drilled and tapped for scope bases, AR-style rifles have their stocks placed in line with the barrel. Because of that, you may need to get the optics higher than traditional mounts allow. This setting is possible with the help of riser blocks attached directly to the Picatinny rail. Quick Take - The Best AR-15 QD Mounts These are our recommendations for the best QD mounts for the AR-15: Burris 410344 AR-PEPR Warne 1-Inch Quick Detach Rings Medium Matte 201LM Nikon P-Series Riflescope Picatinny Mount for 1-Inch Tube Reviews of the Best QD Mounts for the AR-15 The following is a list of the five best quick detach scope mounts. As you look through each one, it’s important to note any characteristics and features that may stand out. There’s a good chance that you may have a scope mount in mind and you’re looking to see if one of these five matches your list of must-haves. If you find one close enough, you might see it as a winner in your eyes. As with other AR accessories, there is a sea of options and styles for AR detachable scope mounts out there. We`ll recommend several quick detachable systems for you to choose from. Hopefully, it will help you make the right choice and avoid creating a weak link that fails at the most inopportune time. Now, let’s begin by taking a look at the first quick detach scope mount on the list: Best Overall: Burris 410344 PEPR CHECK LATEST PRICE Pros Looks aesthetically sharp Excellent for most applications Fits most one-inch or 30 mm scopes Quick to detach on most AR-15 rifles Easy to install, takes a few minutes to install Cons It might be a little too heavy for some users Some wish the design was a little more aesthetic Some windage and elevation adjustments may need to be done before use What Recent Buyers Report A lot of recent buyers loved this scope mount. They were able to install and remove it in a quick amount of time each way. The construction was solid, durable, and allowed for many scopes to be attached. One user said he uses this for various applications like target shooting and hunting. Either way, his scope stayed in place through many rounds. Why it Stands Out to Us This scope mount stands out as one of the best for a few good reasons. One is the amount of ample room it has for scopes with a good amount of eye relief. This is where you can see through the scope with both eyes from a really good distance. How good? More like six inches or longer. Other than that, it allows you to adjust it to any position you find comfortable. Most mounting systems come as three-piece units - you have two ring halves and a base. But this model from Burris comes with a ring and base in a two-piece solution. Having fewer components allows for a more rigid construction. The Burris AR-PEPR or "Proper Eye Position Ready" scope mount is made as a one-piece aluminum base. This mount is extremely efficient to use since it will provide up to two inches of forward scope positioning for perfect eye relief and full field-of-view. There are qhree sizes to choose from, two that are QD. The Quick detach mounting option is available in one-inch and 30 mm rings. There’s also a version with 34 mm size rings but it’s designed as a fixed mount offering 20 MOA of integrated cant. An added benefit is that the top ring halves sport a small, three-row Picatinny rail for attaching accessories. In all three, each ring is secured with six T-15 Torx screws. The mount is tightened with two 1/2″ hex nuts to the Picatinny rail at a high torque value to ensure no slippage. Compared to other scope mounts , this Burris is more compact. However, that means it does not give a lot of flexibility for placing the scope on the rifle, especially if it has large turrets. As a small surprise, considering this is China-built hardware, Burris guarantees 1/4 MOA return upon remounting. Although the Burris AR-PEPR is an excellent mount for the money, it does not come without drawbacks. We’ve already-mentioned limited space between the rings for larger scope knobs. Some shooters also complain about the weight. At 10.4 ounces, including the top Picatinny rails, it is heavier than a lot of the rival mounts. Who Will Use This Most This might be a good general-purpose scope mount for AR-15 rifles. In other words, it can be used for target practice, hunting, competition shooting, and so on. As long as you’re able to attach or detach this so you can add it onto another rifle, this scope mount will do you some good. Bottom Line The Burris Optics Riflescope Mount is by far, one of the best mounts on the market. If you want something that’s excellent in quality and lives up to its purpose as a quick detach scope mount, you’d be hard-pressed to find something as good as this. Runner-up: Warne 1-Inch Quick Detach Rings Medium Matte 201LM CHECK LATEST PRICE Pros Super-sturdy construction Easy to attach and remove Knobs can be easily indexed Fits most one-inch scopes without any issues Holds zero every single time, even through hundreds of rounds Cons May get in the way when you’re cleaning your rifle Some lapping by a professional gunsmith may be required It might be difficult to install with the use of horizontal screws What "Recent Buyers Report" A lot of new users were happy with the scope mounts. They were quick to conclude that these scope rings were reliable and did a good job holding their scopes together (while protecting the scope’s zero settings in the process). They were mostly hunters looking for big game and even some varmints. Why it Stands Out to Us Scope rings have long been considered the most reliable types of scope mounts on the market. Sure enough, these are modernized for today’s shooters. Yes, your father used scope mounts (and so did your grandfather, too), but these rings don’t come close to them. They are made with highly durable materials and will fit all kinds of one-inch scopes. Best of all, you can remove them anytime you like without any complex procedures. Warne Manufacturing Company had incredible success with its RAMP, a one-piece, cantilever-style scope mounting platform featuring an innovative design. It offers unique 45-degree mounting rails on both sides of the mount. The next step from this renowned Oregonian manufacturer was to release the now-famous Quick Release Maxima Rings. In this model, the horizontally-split rings are more spread out, so they are easier to install onto the rifle. The vertically-split rings apply pressure like a hose clamp. This leaves just one small gap not making contact with the scope tube. Since there are two screws placed on the top and two screws on the bottom of the scope tube, the rings with vertical orientation have an added advantage in this design. This takes the form of a slim side profile and a bit more stylish look than most of today's tactical rings. The Warne Scope Mounts QD steel rings are a great product, fulfilling three primary requirements of a top quality scope mount: alignment, rigidity, and strength. Warne’s rings and bases are precision-made and CNC-machined from sintered steel technology. The manufacturer claims that using its Maxima bases and QD rings, this mount will keep accuracy within 1/1000th of an inch when removing and reattaching the optics. Each ring, with its broad surface area, supports your scope securely. A square stainless steel crossbolt ensures positive engagement and great recoil absorption. In addition, Warne rings fit any standard Weaver-style, cross-slot base, so there is no need for the proprietary bases. Warne's Built-In Integral Mount rings are available in one-inch and 30 mm sizes with various finishes such as silver, matte, or gloss. All in all, many shooters consider this the best buy in integral scope rings. However, for the inexperienced user, it can be a little challenging to get them mounted on the scope and adjusted to the rifle It can seem like you need three hands to set up this mount. Some owners also warn that solid steel Warne Maxima rings can crush the scope tube if you overtighten those screws. Who Will "Use This Most" Expect this to be a staple among hunters., especially those looking for a scope mount that will keep the scope in place through many rounds and many hunting adventures. At the same time, this is a scope mount that can take on any impact and abuse (especially bad weather). If you want scope mount rings that are dang-near indestructible, these might be for you. Bottom Line The Warne 1-inch Quick Detach Rings are perhaps your best possible option if you want scope rings that will be more reliable than past models. Attach these onto your favorite scope of choice and you’ll have an excellent scope mount that will get you through any application. Best for the Money: Nikon P-Series Riflescope Picatinny Mount for 1-Inch Tube CHECK LATEST PRICE Pros Fits most one-inch scopes Super durable construction Great mount for Picatinny rails Fits fast and easy on most rifles Holds scopes together and protects their zero settings Cons No specific torque specifications May limit some of your other sight options Will not fit on any other rifles that are not AR rifles What Recent Buyers Report As expected, most recent buyers were impressed with this scope mount. They were quick to point out the solid durability plus the high-profile design, that allow scopes to be elevated enough for a good height boost. On top of that, they were happy with how easy the scope was to align once it was tacked onto the mount. Why it Stands Out to Us This mount is a hybrid of the scope rings and the flat-type scope mounts. They converge together to provide users with a really good scope mount that can keep any scope in place, all while protecting the scope’s zero settings from being thrown off by multiple instances of shock. This is easy to install and as expected, easy to remove. The materials are proven to be sturdy and can handle so many beatings over time. Who Will Use This Most This might be considered a general-purpose scope mount but it is exclusively for AR-15 owners. So if you need a scope mount that will keep your favorite scope in place and allows for zero settings to stay the same through more than 100 rounds, you may want to consider this mount as a possible option. Sturdiness and reliability are the two best things you can get out of a mount like this. Bottom Line The Nikon P-Series Riflescope Picatinny Mount is sturdy, reliable, and will fit your one-inch scope of choice without any issues. Once you’ve installed this on your rifle along with a scope, you’ll have something that will give you a long future of devoted service. Whether you hunt or prefer to shoot targets, it’s the kind of mount that won’t steer you wrong. 4. UTG Integral 1" Offset QD Ring Mount CHECK LATEST PRICE Pros It will fit any Picatinny rail Easy to attach and detach from rifles Rings stay tight and don’t allow any wiggle room for scopes Super durable construction can take on a lot of impact and abuse Will keep your scope’s zero, even when removed, your scope won’t need to be reset Cons Screws are not great quality May be a little pricey for some budget shoppers May not fit between the aperture and bell adjustments on some rifles What Recent Buyers Report According to one new buyer, these were not only the strongest scope rings on the market, but he also called them one of the tightest fitting rings for his scope. He was able to attach it in a matter of minutes without issue. Most other buyers were satisfied with the ease of installation of these scope rings. Why it Stands Out to Us No other scope mount we can think of can fit on almost any Picatinny rail like this. Sure enough, if you have a Picatinny rail, you’ll be able to tack this onto your rifle. What makes this even more interesting is that these can only take scopes measuring at 22 mm in diameter. So, it can handle smaller scopes, all while protecting the zero settings in the process. The Leapers UTG Integral QD Offset "Quick Detach Mount" is a simple and affordable solution with a bi-directional offset feature. This provides extra compensation distance to the eye relief in addition to what the mounting rail usually allows. Utilizing the flip-levers for the QD mechanism by hand (no tools necessary!), the Leapers UTG mount can be locked to or detached from the gun in a second. The UTG Offset Scope Mount can be attached reliably to any Picatinny rail system. The high tolerance control enables repeatable scope zero after multiple QD engagements and disengagements. Featuring one-inch rings with Picatinny grooves on top and a reinforced locking system with adjustable tension, this QD mount works the same as its rivals but at around half the price. The Leapers UTG Integral Mount is machined from aircraft-grade aluminum with a posi-lock crossbar design. Though the construction feels solid, you may want to apply blue Loctite to the screws, including the QD adjustment. Some shooters have also complained about the distance between the rings. Because of this lack of space, riflescopes with target turrets and side parallax will not fit between the rings. Who Will Use This Most This will likely be a scope mount that hunters and competitive shooters will mostly rely on. Even those who have a Picatinny rail they want to put to good use will want to find a scope mount to fit the rail without any installation issues. Sure enough, if it can fit any rail, then these will work for you. Bottom Line The UTG 30 mm Hi-Pro Picatinny QD Rings are another pair of scope rings you can rely on if you want your scope and the zero settings to stay in place. These will fit smaller-sized scopes just nicely. So if you need a scope mount that will work with scopes smaller than one-inch in diameter, this might be right up your alley. 5. American Defense AD-Recon STD CHECK LATEST PRICE Pros Fits most riflescopes Easy to install and detach Affordable for most budgets No zero shift after the scope is removed from the mount Super durable construction, can take on impact and abuse Cons It may be a little too heavy for some users Some scopes may be off-center upon installation Some users report constantly tightening the screws What Recent Buyers Report A lot of new buyers were quite happy with this scope mount. Especially those who use this for target shooting and hunting. Either way, these scope mounts held their own and kept the scopes in place without any wiggle room. One user said this scope also helped keep his zero settings in place. Even after switching it from one AR-15 rifle to the next, the zero settings stayed the same. Why it Stands Out to Us Once again, we see another hybrid design that features scope rings and a flat-mount. This design will keep the scope in place and will also provide excellent protection for the scope’s zero settings. Both work together to make sure your scope is working properly and doesn’t get badly damaged by the shock associated with recoil. All in all, this is a solid scope mount that sets the example of how a mount should work. American Defense Manufacturing (ADM)  produces numerous types of mounts, including ring sizes of one-inch, 30 mm, 32 mm, 34 mm, 35 mm, and 40 mm. They also offer various centerline heights and standard or larger tactical levers in black or dark earth color. Unlike most other mounts in this guide, ADM's Recon scope rings are split vertically. This makes installation easier since you don't need to worry about spacing, as you would with horizontally-split rings. The AD-RECON is a cantilever design that accommodates traditional riflescopes. It provides adequate eye relief on a flat-top-style AR-15. The AD QD mount lets you easily adjust the tension on each lever through adjustment nuts opposite the levers. In other words, this patented ADM system, with the Auto Lock Lever system, enables easy changing of lever tension in the field without tools. It fits any mil-spec rail. Overall, it is a well-built and very stable scope mount fashioned from 6061 T6 aluminum. However, its split ring design may make the initial mounting of your scope a bit more difficult than you are used to. Like other American Defense QD mounts, it comes with a wrench and thread locker. Unlike the Leapers UTG Mount, the American Defense QD mount is a pricier version of the Burris PEPR base at around twice Burris’ price. Who Will Use This Most? This will be used by AR-15 users that want to add on their favorite optic for the purpose of some good old fashioned close-range shooting. So if you’re casually shooting around at the range or looking to land a varmint from a good 100 to 200 yards away, this sturdy optic mount can hold it all together even through as many as 100 rounds or more. Bottom Line If you want a solid, all-around scope mount that will work in your favor in any situation, the American Defense AD-Recon STD Riflescope Optic Mount will probably be something you’ll want to look at a little closer. This might be the best mount for your AR-15 if you want your scope to stay reliable for as long as possible. 6. UTG Med-Pro Compact Riser Mount CHECK LATEST PRICE Pros Super durable Great for red dot sights Affordable for most budgets Allows for easy customization Easy to install. Takes a few minutes Cons Knob might be a little stiff Thumbscrew may loosen up over time May stick out like a sore thumb on some AR-15 What Recent Buyers Report This mount is a sturdy little unit that has been nothing short of impressive for according to most users. They said that it took a few minutes to tack it on to their rifles. One user said once he added it onto his rifle, it stayed securely in place. Why it Stands Out to Us This is a smaller version of a Picatinny rail. But it’s large enough to handle so many scopes and optics. So if you want to add on whatever eight you can depend on, this mount could be exactly what you need. Compared to standard scope mounts, the Leapers UTG Compact Riser Mount presents a new approach to scope mounting systems for rifles with a Picatinny or Weaver rail. The latest UTG riser mount adjusts any optic accessory that is not quick detachable to a quickly-detachable configuration, allowing you to customize it to your needs and wishes. The Leapers UTG offers its riser mount in three different mounting lengths and three of the most commonly sought-out saddle height profiles. Our suggestion would be a model with a see-through design that features a saddle height of 0.83” and with three Picatinny slots. UTG is known as the maker of low-end stuff,  but this sleek profile, well-designed riser creates an ideal solution for getting 1/3rd co-witness with iron sights for your optics . This perfect, low-cost upgrade is constructed out of aircraft-grade aluminum and then finished with a hard-anodized black matte finish. This UTG riser is convenient and durable, but you might face the to need to retighten the mounts via the plastic-like wingnut. It’s a commonly-seen recommendation that this screw be turned into a quick detach lever instead. Who Will Use This Most This will be a great accessory for AR-15 owners that want to add on a little extra for customization purposes. If you plan on adding a scope or optic to your rifle and need a long enough riser mount to handle it, this should an accessory that you must have. Bottom Line The UTG Med-Pro Compact Riser Mount will look good on just about any AR-15. Yes, it’s short and stout. But it can handle all kinds of impact and recoil. So you have a mount that can stay intact even after hundreds of rounds. Conclusion Already the most popular sporting and tactical rifle, the AR-15 becomes even more versatile by utilizing a finely-machined QD mounting system to enhance your shooting experience. This handy bit of equipment is the ideal accessory to bring your optic to the most comfortable and safest shooting height. Today's manufacturers, by applying modern technological processing, have reduced the average shift after reattaching the QD mounts to the rifle to mere hundredths of an MOA. Even though they’re generally more expensive, quick detach scope mounts are undoubtedly a good choice when you want versatility in your optics .

Custom AR-15: Hog Guns and .300 Blackout

Custom AR-15: Hog Guns and .300 Blackout

/* custom css */.td_uid_2_5f37651539eb2_rand.td-a-rec-img { text-align: left; } .td_uid_2_5f37651539eb2_rand.td-a-rec-img img { margin: 0 auto 0 0; } By equipping your custom AR-15 .300 Blackout with night vision, you can shop for all the pork you could possibly want. What you need in a hog-hunting AR-15: Hogs are tough characters. Use the largest caliber AR you can still shoot quickly. Nighttime is hog time, and night vision optics are more accessible and affordable than ever. If pork is on your grocery list, consider a weapons light and suppressor for your custom AR-15. This is a FLIR thermal optic on a .300 Blackout carbine. It offers an affordable thermal sight, with a cost under three grand, and ruggedness enough to last through a lot of nighttime hog-whacking. The world is being over-run. On the seas, the water is filling with jellyfish. On land, hogs. Or so it seems, at times. Hogs are productive (at least when it comes to making more hogs), adaptable and smart. They are also quite destructive, at least from the perspective of farmers and ranchers. A squadron of hogs can pretty much reduce a plot of crops to a muddy mess in the course of a weekend. Shooting them is not considered hunting in most locales, especially the ones that suffer from their presence. No, it is pest eradication. The process is not sniping or whacking a single hog, the big, trophy hog. No, the idea is to get as many of them as possible at each opportunity. The ATN Night Arrow is an integrated night vision and optic with a built-in reticle. You only need it, not an optic and an NVG. Complicating this is the cleverness of the hogs. They are smart enough to know what is going on, and ornery enough to not like it. If you hunt hogs, they will adapt. Quickly. Ambush a new fleet of them on a nice sunny day, and they will move to dawn and dusk. Go after them then, and they will hole up in the light hours and come out only at night. This doesn’t take long if the ones you are hunting having been briefed by others, and they are already starting at night. So, you’ll be using specialty optics. Before we get to that, there is the matter of caliber. I’ve been told that the .223/5.56 is marginal, that the .300 Blackout is enough or marginal, and that everything up to a tactical nuke is “marginal.” Yes, they are tough, but they are not all the size of Buicks. You can use whatever you want, like, have or are recommended. My suggestion on caliber is this: consider the biggest one with the stoutest load that you can shoot quickly and accurately. A .300 blackout that you can hit with at the rate of 3-4 shots per second is probably better than a .458 Socom that you can hit with at the rate of 3-4 shots in ten seconds. A removable night vision scope is great for nighttime pest control. You can move it from one rifle to another and not change zero, since the zero is in the optic that this sits in front of. Use the biggest caliber that you can hit fast with. Then scope it up. Related GunDigest Articles The Quintessential 22 Pistol: The Colt Woodsman AK-74: Soviet Blaster for the 5.45x39mm Cartridge Does This Mossberg 590 Tactical Shotgun Blow The Rest Away? Since the hogs will be out at night, you will want to use night vision gear. Also known by the acronym NVG, or NODs, these are photomultipliers that let you see in dim light. Starlight, in fact. Even a hint of moon helps, but it helps the hogs, too. Overcast makes NVG useless, as it hasn’t anything to magnify. NVG Night vision comes in two types, add-ons and weaponsights. The add-ons are just night vision multipliers. They take in the ambient light, crank it up thousands of times, and pump it out as a video picture in a small TV screen on the back of the unit. This is the ubiquitous “green screen” image we see in movies and TV shows. The image is not nearly as hi-res as your smartphone, in part because the expense of making it such would be hideous, and in part because the volume of production can’t support that cost. Each pixel you see in the image on your NVG is a “pipe” of the multiplier. If you wanted to double the resolution, you would have to double the number of microscopic pipes that are used by the photomultiplier to produce that image. The ATN in front of the magnifying optic. You mount the NVG on your rifle with your regular aiming optic already mounted behind it. You look through your scope, at the image of the NVG, and as long as your scope was properly zeroed, you get hits. The big advantage here is that you can install the scope, zero it, and know it is on. Then put the NVG on when you need it, and take it off when you don’t, and not change your zero . The disadvantage is that you have two scopes, with their combined weight, on the rifle at night. When night shooting was sniping and single shots, this wasn’t a problem. When trying to whack a whole herd of hogs before they can flee, extra weight is a problem. The setup is exemplified by my ATN NVG. This is a day/night system, where you mount it for night and take it off for the day. This is not to be confused with a Day-Night scope, which can be used at both times of day. Behind it, use the scope of your choice. I generally don’t use anything with more magnification than 10X. The reason is simple: you are not magnifying 10X on the NVG as you would be in the day. The daytime “resolution” of the world is beyond the parameters of the 2K, 4K, 8K digital methodology. When you zoom up in your scope, you see 10X closer of an object that can be viewed microscopically if you had the gear. Yes, it is not uncommon for there to be a bit of misalignment between the magnifying optic and the NVG. This can be corrected with a set of rings to adjust the optic to the axis of the NVG. A small problem in the scheme of things, and a slight mismatch isn’t an impediment to good shooting. When you zoom up to 10X on an NVG display, you are zooming up on a screen that is 640×480 in resolution. If you go X enough, you simply see pixels you can’t turn into an image. So, use as much as you want, but realize that you run into the law of diminishing returns really quickly.

{ TOP 10 } Best Air Guns July 2020 Updated Reviews

An air gun is a rifled gun that propels a projectile by means of compressed air. The basic principle of air gun is compressed air is stored in the gun until the time of firing. After firing, gas is released behind the projectiles which propels it down the barrel. This principal remains the same between earlier version of air rifle and the Best Air Guns of modern time. But earlier time rifle differs markedly with recent time air rifle. The major difference is how and where compressed air was stored. For example, some of the early rifles had a reservoir ( in some cases in the rear section of the stock) to store compressed air. Also earlier version of rifles utilized projectiles of .30, .35, or even larger caliber. However, significant change has been taken place in modern air files. These are most powerful than their previous counterpart. For instance, Best Air Guns could be .177 cal (4.5mm) that has a muzzle energy of about 20ft/lbs. Rifle Shooting Basics: The Long-Forgotten Loop Sling

Rifle Shooting Basics: The Long-Forgotten Loop Sling

/* custom css */.td_uid_2_5f379d8ee6038_rand.td-a-rec-img { text-align: left; } .td_uid_2_5f379d8ee6038_rand.td-a-rec-img img { margin: 0 auto 0 0; } In sitting position with support forearm wrapped around sling and hand between sling and stock and wedged against front swivel. One of the most useful rifle shooting aids is also one of the most neglected. That is the use of the loop sling. The support and steadiness it provides, when properly used, is enormous. The hasty sling in offhand. Note rear strap across chest. Contrary to what you may have read before, the loop sling does not “tie the rifle to your shoulder,” or to your arm for that matter. What it does is to replace your support arm bicep muscle in holding up the weight of the rifle, not only taking one more trembling muscle out of the picture, but also preventing the support arm elbow joint angle from opening up and lowering the rifle, and even helping support the weight of the upper body in certain positions. While proper use of the shooting loop sling was long a staple of military training and was well known amongst hunters, the military started getting away from teaching it in the years after the Korean War. As a result, the knowledge of how to use this handy technique has all but disappeared from both the military and civilian worlds of riflery. This is a shame, as a properly set-up sling is a major aid to gaining a steady position. Col. Cooper’s observations, if I recall correctly, were that the shooting loop sling is useful in perhaps 60% of rifle hunting situations, and increases your steadiness by about 30%. I personally think he was being conservative. Related GunDigest Articles Video: Action Rifle Shooting with Jerry Miculek Video: Practical Rifle Shooting Positions in the Field Video: Mastering the Basics of Precision Shooting The best use of the shooting loop sling requires the support arm elbow (left elbow if you shoot righty) to be rested on a support. This can be a log, car hood (if legal for hunting in your state – it’s not in mine!), the ground (in prone), or your own leg (kneeling, squatting, or sitting). Sliding the loop all the way up your support upper arm can be done quickly with practice so when you get into position your rifle is steadied. When your elbow is hanging in the air you still have to use your support-side shoulder (front deltoid) muscle to hold everything up, so much of the steadiness a loop sling affords is wasted, since the only muscle it replaces is the bicep. If your elbow is not supported you can’t truly relax your support arm from shoulder to fingertips. If the situation calls for – and allows – the taking of any position or rest where the support arm elbow is planted on something solid, the shooting sling is the quickest, simplest, and least cumbersome steadiness aid there is. Got a bipod? Fine. How much weight does it add to your rifle, and how long does it take to deploy it and adjust its length properly? Carrying shooting sticks? Okay, how do you like carrying them all day? How much movement do you make setting them up properly?

Buyer’s Guide Gerry Outdoors was the first company to invent a backpack with a zipper way back in 1938. ( 3 ) Before that, school children were largely using bags with straps and backpacks used by hikers and recreationists used other means of securing their contents. Since the 1930s, the size, shape, and functionality of backpacks have exploded exponentially. We’ve put this Buyer’s Guide together to help you learn more about what separates one pack from another. In doing so, we’ve focused on a number of factors about backpack construction that you must consider in the selection of your new travel backpack. Fabrics Denier count is the most widely used term for describing the strength of the fabric used in today’s backpacks. However, the type of fabric utilized in backpack construction is just as important, if not more so, than the thickness of that fabric. In this section, we’ll describe a few of the common fabric types you’ll find in common travel backpacks. Ripstop nylon contains a special, square weave that sets it apart from standard nylon. This weave prevents additional ripping or tearing from occurring after a puncture. It has a very high strength-to-weight ratio and gets that strength from the additional fibers that are sewn into the weave. This type of fabric was first developed as stronger alternative to silk parachutes in World War II. ( 4 ) Cordura® nylon is a popular one that you’ll see in a lot of backpacks today. In fact, Cordura® isn’t its own type of nylon at all. Rather, it is a brand that offers many different types of fabrics. In essence, the Cordura® brand inspects materials from a variety of different mills, picks the ones that are up to their standard, and then puts their ‘Cordura®’ tag on it. They do, however, tend to put that tag on only the highest quality fabrics out there. The other brand name you’ll see attached to nylon is ‘Kodra’, which is essentially the same thing as Cordura®, but it is made in Korea. Polyester is another fabric often used in backpack design. It is made from plastic fibers that tend not to be the best choice for a travel pack. When it comes to travel packs, you’ll often see ‘ripstop polyester’ which, like ripstop nylon, is made with a special weave that makes it much stronger and more durable than standard polyester. While packs that use polyester can be more budget-friendly, they won’t stand up to the heavy abuse that can come with traveling. Canvas can be viewed as one of the original backpack materials, along with leather. Aside from burlap, canvas was the go-to material for all of the early backpacks and cargo bags. Canvas is very thick and sturdy. Historically, canvas was stitched together using cotton, linen, or hemp before being coated in wax for waterproofing. Today’s canvas options are more typically made with nylon and polyester and canvas is much less common than it used to be. That decrease in popularity can be attributed to the fact that canvas is heavier, more easily damaged by abrasion, and less water-resistant than other modern materials. Straps Shoulder straps will be largely responsible for the comfort of your travel backpack. The type of straps that work for you will depend on your unique body type. Even when your pack isn’t completely full, it can be uncomfortable to carry if the straps don’t match your body. For some people thinner straps may be more comfortable than their bulkier counterparts, but typically this is only the case if those straps are also highly padded. There are some packs that offer swivel straps for increased adjustability across varying shoulder widths. This type of strap also makes it much easier to turn the pack around to access its contents when needed. Curved straps (as opposed to straight straps) also tend to work better for women or men with larger chests. Finally, if weight is your primary concern, make sure to look for a pack with load lifters. These are adjusters that are located at the top of the straps where they attach to the body of the backpack. These adjusters give you the ability to change how the pack’s weight sits on your back. In doing so, they make a pack much more adjustable to a wide variety of body types. Zippers Zippers are the most common weak point in packs that claim to be weatherproof or water-resistant. The best type of zipper on the market today is a YKK zipper. They are very strong and come in different weights according to the specific area on the pack where they’ll be applied. ( 5 ) YKK manufactures their zippers in-house, including smelting their own brass and forging their own zipper teeth. Choosing a pack with YKK zippers will help you ensure that you won’t suffer broken zippers while traveling. Top-Loading vs. Panel-Loading Top-loading packs are those that offer one opening (at the top!) for loading and unloading gear. Panel-loading packs offer a larger zippered pocket that allows you to lay the pack flat and have greater access to its contents, almost like a regular suitcase. While top-loading packs are still the preferred variety for long, multi-day treks and other outdoor activities, traveling is so much simpler with a panel-loading pack. It allows you to worry less about the specific order in which you pack your belongings and gives you easy access to that swimsuit buried in your pack when you receive a last-minute invitation to go surfing! Compression Because we’re talking about travel backpacks, versatility is the name of the game. A quality travel backpack can handle a variety of environments and travel experiences while adapting to your needs in each scenario. Compression is one of the ways in which travel backpacks showcase their versatility. Proper compression allows you to hunker the weight of your pack down even when it’s not completely full. This means that things won’t feel like they’re rattling around back there when you’re walking or running to catch a train. Another benefits of compression straps is that they also allow you to secure additional items to the pack’s exterior if it’s already full. Security Features Security is crucial when traveling, especially if you’re constantly exploring new and unfamiliar environments. You should feel comfortable knowing that your belongings are safe and sound when you leave them behind at the hostel for a grocery run, for example. Having a travel backpack with lockable zippers is a great way to ensure your belongings are always safe and secure. RFID blockers are another interesting feature growing in popularity for international travel. These will keep unsavory characters from scanning your passport or other sensitive documents as you pass them by. Some backpack designers have begun incorporating stronger materials to reduce this possibility and to make it harder for thieves to ‘slash-and-grab’ items from your pack. The former is probably the more common occurrence, so if you have to pick one over the other, look for a pack that uses stronger fabrics, such as Cordura®, before you start worrying too much about the world of RFID technology. Frequently Asked Questions There are always a number of logistics to align when traveling, whether it’s for business or personal reasons. In this list of "Frequently Asked Questions" , we’ll answer some of the most common concerns about travel backpacks so that you can turn your attention to the rest of the logistics for your trip. What is the maximum backpack size for carry-on luggage? While we wish there was one standard answer to this question, it’s important to remember that every airline has slightly different rules concerning carry-on size limits ( 6 ). Speaking very generally, the maximum backpack size for carry-on luggage is about 45 liters. The good news about backpacks, when compared with other luggage types, is that the sides are compressible to make squeezing them down to the prescribed dimensions a bit easier. Why travel with a backpack? Backpacks make it so much easier to navigate new environments. Suitcases are much more difficult to store in buses, under seats, and so on and so forth. Suitcases with wheels don’t roll very well on dirt or cobblestone roads, and carrying them over a distance is uncomfortable and tiresome. For today’s adventure and business travelers, a quality backpacks beats all other options. Are any of these backpacks 100% waterproof? While many of these packs are water-resistant or have been thoroughly weatherproofed, you’d be hard pressed to find a travel backpack that is truly 100% waterproof. Many will hold up just fine in a 20-minute tropical downpour (and keep your belongings dry throughout), getting your pack to be 100% waterproof requires buying an external rain cover and putting it on before heading out. What is bluesign® approved fabric? You may see some brands advertise the bluesign® approval. This is a standard that is largely considered to be the strictest in regards to environmental protection, workplace safety, and consumer protection. Seeing a product with this label means that all the materials used in that product have gone through a rigorous testing process and met the criteria and limits of the BSSL restricted substances list ( 7 ). Summary There’s really no limit to how far you can travel with the right pack on your back. The benefits of having just one travel backpack to worry about are numerous, and travelers will surely enjoy the ability to get around easily with all that they need securely on their backs. We hope you’ve enjoyed this collection of the top ten travel backpacks and we wish you the best of luck selecting the right pack for your next adventure.

How to Paint Your AR-15: [Skip the Camo Krylon!]

Trending: Best Places to Buy Ammo Online and [Buyer's Guide] 7 Best AR-15s Sick of your rifle looking exactly like everyone else’s? Then it’s time to paint that bad boy! A couple of our rattle canned ARs Don’t worry, painting your rifle isn’t hard or scary. The best thing you can do to prep yourself for this is to lower your expectations and accept the fact that nothing is perfect and the paint will wear off to some degree. Unless, of course, your rifle just lives in the safe… If reading isn’t your thing or you want to see our mad painting skillz in action check out our video: If that helped, please subscribe to our YouTube channel since we’re adding new videos every week! Now onto the written tutorial… Best Paint Several brands offer great options for painting your rifle, but for this project we used Model Master Enamel paint for their extended choice of colors. We’ve also used Rust-Oleum Specialty Camouflage , Brownells’ Aluma-Hyde , and Krylon Camouflage with great results. Model Masters paint In order of appearance in the video: Light Earth SAC Bomber Tan Dark Tan Olive Drab Africa Mustard As for wear pattern, it’s pretty close to Krylon…meaning it will wear after a couple trips to the range. Which for us is exactly what we want. Before You Paint There are only really two things that we strongly recommend you adhere to before painting your rifle: cleaning it and blocking off sensitive areas. Blast it with brake cleaner to remove all the oil, grease, and dirt Give the outside of your rifle a good cleaning, wipe it down, get the dirt and grime off, then follow that up with a good spray down with brake cleaner to strip any grease and oil that might still be on the rifle. We recommend going with chlorine free versions in case of polymer furniture. Getting rid of this is critical to giving the paint a chance to stick. But if you’re really into the taste and feel of paint chips, you can skip cleaning the rifle. Use masking or painter’s tape to block off the ejection port, magazine well, and muzzle. Getting paint in any of these areas isn’t the end of the world, but can induce malfunctions until the paint is worn off or cleaned off. Don’t forget to tape your ejection port, magwell, and muzzle! Better to just not get paint there in the first place. How to Paint Your AR-15 (or really any rifle) Base Layer Starting with the darkest color you’re going to be working with will help set the tone of the rifle and give a great background for the other colors to do their thing. Dark Base Coat For us, that meant Dark Tan . Apply the color using sweeping strokes, careful not to hold in any place or to apply to much paint too quickly or you’ll leave globs of paint. This can be done until you’re satisfied and will prevent the paint from pooling or dripping. More Colors Once you have a good base ready, it’s time to change things up. We like strips using our lightest color to give the rifle sharp contrasts. Light Strips For camouflaging properties, contrasts are what you want to avoid. But giving it these sharp lines now makes it easier to slowly blend in as more coats and colors are used. Use the same quick sweeping motion you used before when painting the strips, too little is always better than too much! Stencils, Foliage, Laundry bags More passes with more colors will help to deaden the contrast and make your rifle blend into your surroundings more cleanly, but there is more to do than just color after color! Fade It In Using local foliage (leaves, stems, etc) or patterned objects as stencils will produce varied patterns on the rifle that will further break up the sharp contrasts and lines. We used part of a mesh laundry bag to produce an ersatz snakeskin look to the rifle. Cheaper than a proper stencil and just as good! The aforementioned Snakeskin look Parting Shots Repeat the steps above until you have the rifle you’re looking for. Remember – you’re only limited by your imagination! If you’re worried about messing it up, maybe try painting a Nerf gun or water gun first so you can try your hand at keeping the paint from dripping, running, or globbing up.
